The Mitten Roots

Our Story

At The Mitten Roots, we strive to bring beauty and durability to everyday life by creating with materials found in nature. We started because we wanted to bring high quality, durable home goods and accessories at an affordable price.

We operate in a way that is friendly to the environment and to the planet. Many of our goods are made from wood that we've gathered ourselves from fallen trees. Scraps of wood that can't be used for products go into the outdoor firebox to heat the woodshop during the winter. Our stock-wood is purchased from a local lumber yard, and we try to get as many supplies as possible from local companies and other small businesses.

Meet Us

Jolene Payne - The Mitten Roots

Jolene has wanted a laser cutter since she saw one that was released on Kickstarter. Her original dream was to make doll furniture with the laser. As her vision developed, she realized it could be use to to make products in a thorough, transparent way, a contrast to many modern manufacturers of home goods and accessories.

Josh Schultz - The Mitten Roots

Josh has been doing custom woodworking for years in his workshop. In 2013, he bought a sawmill to be able to cut up ash trees that were being destroyed by the emerald ash bore that are invading Michigan. For him, the recent purchase of a laser cutter expands the variety of products that can be made.

We cut, sand, and laser engrave all of our products in our machine shop in Delton, Michigan.
